Funded by El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation Facilitated by El Paso Children’s Hospital

The El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to improving the health and well-being of children and families in the borderland region. Through the Empower Program we aim to reduce the risks of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in children and teens by offering comprehensive programs that promote healthy lifestyles.

The Empower Program is accompanied by the El Paso Heath Teaching Kitchen, working together to create a brighter, healthier future for families in our community.

Empower Program

The Empower Program at El Paso Children’s Hospital is a vital resource for children and teens who are at risk for or already diagnosed with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. This program, partially funded by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, is designed to help children adopt sustainable lifestyle changes with the support of their families and care teams.

Program Highlights:

  • Personalized Health Plans: Each child works with a dietitian and social worker to develop a customized plan with specific, achievable goals. Plans are also shared with the child’s pediatrician to ensure coordinated care.
  • Family-Centered Approach: The program focuses on involving the entire family in making healthier lifestyle choices, fostering a supportive environment for success.
  • Counseling Services: Families can access behavioral support to overcome barriers and maintain long-term healthy habits.

El Paso Teaching Kitchen

Thanks to a generous donation from El Paso Health, the El Paso Teaching Kitchen is transforming the way families approach food and nutrition. This innovative space offers hands-on learning opportunities for children and families, teaching them to prepare healthy, affordable meals and develop sustainable eating habits.

What the Teaching Kitchen Offers:

  • Cooking Demonstrations: Step-by-step guidance for creating balanced and delicious meals.
  • Nutrition Classes: Learn the essentials of a healthy diet and how to make better food choices.
  • Workshops: Build skills for meal planning, shopping, and preparing cost-effective, nutritious meals.

Through this initiative, we aim to empower families with the knowledge and skills needed to improve their overall health.

A Shared Mission

The collaboration between the Empower Program and the El Paso Teaching Kitchen underscores our commitment to combating diabetes and fostering a culture of health in the borderland. Together, these programs provide the education, resources, and support needed to inspire lifelong changes in nutrition, fitness, and overall well-being.
