On December 1st, the El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation joined The Sadaya Burnette Foundation, family, friends, and supporters for a deeply meaningful Naming Rights Ceremony. Held on what would have been Sadaya Burnett’s 15th birthday. The day marked a celebration of her life, her legacy, and the extraordinary generosity of her family in support of families battling epilepsy.
Sadaya’s journey with epilepsy began at just six years old, when she was diagnosed with absence seizures. Her family remained encouraged by the belief that she might outgrow them. But as years passed, her condition became more complex, bringing new types of seizures, medication changes, and countless medical appointments. Through every challenge, her family stood with her in strength and unwavering love.
Despite their dedication and the expertise of specialists, Sadaya passed away on May 14, 2024, from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) a risk her parents were unaware of. Their loss was unimaginable, yet their bravery in sharing Sadaya’s story is now reshaping awareness and strengthening support for families facing similar journeys.
To honor Sadaya’s life, her family established the Sadaya Burnett Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families affected by epilepsy. The foundation focuses on increasing education about epilepsy and SUDEP, advocating for families as they navigate complex treatment journeys, and raising awareness to reduce stigma and promote understanding. Rooted in compassion and inspired by Sadaya’s strength, the foundation ensures that her story continues to guide, uplift, and empower others facing similar challenges.
During the ceremony, the Sadaya Burnette Foundation made a remarkable $100,000 Naming Rights gift to the El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation. In recognition of this generous contribution, the new Family Kitchen on the 8th floor, home to the hospital’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, was officially named after the Sadaya Burnett Foundation. This act of generosity reflects not only their love for Sadaya, but their desire to support families who are walking the same difficult path they once did.
The newly named Family Kitchen was chosen with intention and care. Families with children in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit often stay for long, emotionally difficult periods. This space gives them the ability to meet their basic needs without leaving their child’s side.
